How to upgrade Trello for Microsoft Teams (and solve the disappearing tab problem)

So, long hiatus ignored, I’m following the wisdom that if you solve a technical problem, no matter how small, you should post about it. And this problem was annoying enough that I had to open a support ticket, so maybe someone else could use the help at some point in the future.

This week, I got several emails and notifications that Trello was going to get a big update — yay! But, when I went to use the app in Microsoft Teams, its upgrade instructions didn’t apply to me. I.e., the ‘upgrade’ button didn’t appear where they said it would. Sigh. See images below where the bot and app tooltips refer to an upgrade button in the top right corner that just isn’t there.

Looked everywhere, couldn’t figure it out, submitted a help ticket, waited. Then today, the Trello tab I was using in a channel disappeared and couldn’t be re-added. Turns out they do that when they need to be upgraded.

This is what you need to do (to upgrade apps):

  1. Go to Manage Team in the Team’s (not channel’s) settings
  2. Go to the Apps tab; all connected apps will be listed here
  3. Click on the app in question (in this case Trello); it will pop up an info overlay
  4. Select to upgrade the app

After doing this, the tab reappeared in the channel.

Hope this helps somebody else out there!
